Covers the people and creatures. Some are given as historical references (some animals well known today were considered mythical as little as a century ago), most are as-yet unrecognized and unclassified species, a few are shown as not tenable. Various categories which include mystery creatures of the sea (giant turtles were of greatest interest to me), mystery primates, and mystery cats. Very interesting book, a handy reference, if anything seems too short.

I enjoy almost everything Loren Coleman and Jerome Clark publish, and in this collaboration, the writing style continues to be fluid, entertaining, and concise. The pairing of bonafide research and solid prose lends tremendous credibility to wide ranging reports of extremely rare species that have eluded capture, and hence verification by empirical (show me a carcass or live specimen) science. The entries seem a bit abbreviated at times and both writers have published much more detailed works on the same material. But, if you enjoy a few minutes reading before dozing off to sleep at night, then this book is perfect. Only beware! A few minutes can turn into a couple of hours with this collection of highly entertaining and thoroughly convincing campfire tales!
