The Real Men in Black - Review

104600509-191x300Most of us have seen the Men in Black movies, right? Those cool, hip guys carrying around weapons that must have been created by "Q" of James Bond fame. Wow! Wouldn't it be cool to be one of the Men in Black, saving the world for some secret Government organization? That is how I felt until I read The Real Men in Black. Yikes. If you think of the Men in Black as being like Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, think again, and be prepared to have the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up.

I admit that before reading this book, most of what I knew about the Men in Black phenomena was from the movies. For whatever reason I never delved into the subject. I would occasionally read or hear a story that mentioned the Men in Black but I didn't give it a second thought. I always thought of them, if they existed, as being kind of like the Secret Service that guards the President. Man was I wrong.

Meet Nick Redfern, the author of "The Real Men in Black". Mr. Redfern is a full time author, lecturer andnickpromo journalist. He writes for magazines and other publications such as UFO Magazine, Fate, Fortean Times and Paranormal Magazine. Nick has appeared on several TV programs like UFO Hunters, BBC's Out of This World, Monster Quest from the History Channel, Paranatural from the National Geographic channel and the SyFy channel’s Proof Positive. Nick knows his subject.

I hadn't heard of Mr. Redfern before reading this book, but I picked up his other books immediately when I finished “The Real Men in Black”. Some of his other titles include, The NASA Conspiracies, Contactees, and Memoirs of a Monster Hunter. I love Nick’s writing style. It reminds me of a detective from one of those great black and white movies from the 40?s and 50?s. Hard-boiled, to the point writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The one thing that stuck out for me early on in the book is that I trusted Nick and his research.

The book has many real life case studies, including the very first man to claim an encounter with the Men in Black, Albert Bender in 1945. It also includes some famous people giving their experiences and accounts. One such author, paranormal investigator extraordinaire is Brad Steiger, a personal hero of mine. You will find his stories in Chapter 4 and it is my favorite chapter.

Some interesting things you will come across in this book:

  • What ties the MIB to the FBI?

  • What do the MIB have to do with the Mothman saga?

  • Why are the MIB involved with the Loch Ness mOnster?

  • What about Women in Black?

  • Time Travelers?

  • Is there photographic evidence of MIB? Yup!

  • Do MIB have something to do with the occult, Ouija boards or demons?

  • and sooooooo much more.

And now a word of caution. If you are someone bothered by reading or hearing stories like this, then please don’t read this book. If things like this disturb you or give you nightmares, then maybe choose a different book. While this is a VERY interesting and fascinating read, it will also creep you out. I live in the mountains in a remote area near a forest. I can’t tell you how many times I think I have seen a shadow at the window or jumped when walking by a mirror because this book is still on my mind.

If the MIB ever do knock on my door though, I have some comfort in the knowing that the book tells you exactly what to do in that situation to get rid of them. You will want to read this book to know what to do before the MIB come calling on you.

Exposed, Uncovered & Declassified: UFOs and Aliens - Is There Anybody Out There?

98650585For many years people have been fascinated and interested in anything dealing with UFO’s and aliens. Who doesn’t want to believe that we are not alone in the vast universe? Many people who gravitate to these subjects also “believe” or maybe a better word is “hope” that alien visitors are watching over us and will step-in and save us from ourselves.

If you ever wanted to attend a UFO round table, where you could ask a question to various experts in the field and get their ideas and insights about UFO’s and alien contact, then this book is for you. Some of the experts and their ideas include:

Nuclear physicist and world-renowned UFO expert Stanton T. Friedman discusses how close we really are to interstellar travel.

Nick Pope, former member of the British Ministry of Defence, covers the latest UFO documents released by the UK’s National Archives, including such fascinating information as: what Churchill knew, why the documents are being released now, what’s in them, and what’s still being withheld.

Donald Schmitt, the former co-director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, takes on the aftermath of the Roswell incident, discussing in detail the initial stages of the government’s cover-up attempts.

Air Force veteran Thomas J. Carey chronicles the military’s attempts to intimidate people into not telling their stories about what they have seen with their own eyes.

The niece of Betty and Barney Hill, Kathleen Marden, gives a short history of cases of alien abduction, many which continue to baffle the American public and UFO investigators alike.

Nick Redfern provides a fresh take on the famous 1953 UFO crash in Kingman, Arizona, and explores its possible connection to a government program to reverse-engineer alien spacecraft.

I enjoyed this book very much. I learned some new things about UFO’s that I hadn’t heard before, and because the book is a collection of essays from the various experts, it held my interest easily. This book covers it all from UFO craft, Alien Abduction to Ancient Astronaut theories involving genetic manipulation. Good stuff!

Meet the Editors:

Michael Pye has been an acquisitions editor for New Page Books since 2003. He developed a healthy appetite for the unexplained by watching far too many episodes of In Search Of hosted by Leonard Nimoy after school instead of doing his homework, which turned him into a reader of books on the strange and unexplained. He earned a BA in English from Southern Connecticut State University.

Kirsten Dalley has functioned in various editorial capacities at New Page Books since 2004. She is coauthor of The Nightmare Encyclopedia, along with Jeff Belanger. She graduated from Columbia University with a BA in comparative literature, which has proven to be of use in both her career and her leisure pursuits (reading fiction and riding sportbikes).

The World’s Most Haunted Places | From the Secret Files of Ghostvillage.com

101271515Do you love ghost hunting as much as I do? Does the thought of prowling around in an old haunted house get you going? If so, I just finished reading a book I think you will want to read ASAP. It is called "The World’s Most Haunted Places, Revised Edition: From the Secret Files of Ghostvillage.com" or as I like to refer to it, "The Tour Guide Book of the Supernatural".

Halloween is fast approaching and at this time of the year, I like to find books with a ghostly or supernatural bent. I like fiction, but when it come to ghost stories, I want the real thing.A Jeff Belanger, (jeffbelanger.com) the author of this book takes us on a tour around the U.S. as well as other places around the world. We not only get to hear the spine tingling tales about ghosts, spirits and the macabre, but we also learn some historical tidbits about the various haunted places as well. How cool is that?

Who is Jeff Belanger? Jeff is one of the world’s most visible and prolific paranormal researchers. Since898c1fb98de60ad8986cf5.L._V203183943_-150x150 1997, the former journalist has interviewed thousands of eyewitnesses to paranormal occurrences. He is the author of a dozen books on the paranormal; the founder of Ghostvillage.com one of the Web’s most popular paranormal destinations, and a noted speaker and media personality. Belanger is the series writer and researcher for Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel. He’s been a guest on more than 200 radio and television programs including: The History Channel, The Travel Channel, PBS, The Maury Show, The CBS News Early Show, National Public Radio, The BBC, Australian Radio Network, and Coast to Coast AM. So yeah, Jeff is qualified to take us on this ghost tour for sure.

Here are some of the highlights from the book:

President Lincoln has been walking the halls of the White House in Washington, D.C., for more than a century.
The Queen Mary may just be the most storied and haunted ship on the planet.
The catacombs of Paris contain the skeletal remains of six million bodies…and many of their ghosts.
And the Tower of London is haunted by noblemen and commoners–some still searching for the heads they lost more than 500 years ago.
You will explore libraries, museums, restaurants, inns, and landmarks from North America, South America, Europe, and Australia. Use this as a guide book and go see some of these places yourself. Of course, the White House is probably not going to happen unless you can get an invite somehow.

I enjoyed this book a lot, from the history lessons, to the legends and sightings of ghostly activity. If you are interested in subjects like this, I can’t imagine you not liking this book. It is well written, interesting and scary too. Curl up in front of a fire and dig in. Just be ready for the feeling that someone or something is behind you ready to pounce. That is this kind of book. Enjoy!

You can get it at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble. There doesn't appear to be a Nook or Kindle version as of this writing.

The World's Creepiest Places

101271509Did you know about Rhode Island's infamous "vampire county"? I didn't either. How about a rural Irish hall reportedly invested with demons? Nope. Or a Hungarian Castle where a twisted countess allegedly bathed in the blood of virgins to maintain her youth? Yikes! A hamlet in Kansas reputed to be the gateway to hell, or a Tibetan building so mysterious that Adolf Hitler dispatched underlings to investigate? This gets creepier and creepier.

If these snippets peaked your attention, this next book I am going to review will find a place on your library shelf, after you devour it from cover to cover. And believe me…the above descriptions are but a tiny sample of what is contained in The World's Creepiest Places and they aren't even the creepiest from the book!

The author, Dr. Bob Curran was born in a remote area of County Down, Northern Ireland, but left to travel and work in the United States., France, Italy, Mexico, North Africa, Spain, Holland, and parts of Eastern Europe. This has given him insight into the cultures and beliefs of people around the world. Living again in Northern Ireland, he holds several university degrees and acts as a consultant to such bodies as the Office of First, Deputy First Minister, and Tourism Ireland Ltd.

He is author of many popular books on folklore such as Vampires; Werewolves; Man-Made Monsters; and Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms (all published by New Page Books). He can be found musing on drbobcurran.blogspot.com.

curranDr. Curran has been just about everywhere from his native Ireland and through the empty deserts of the Middle East, to the misty hills of Tibet and back through Europe to America. He’s not only looking for ghosts, but also for sinister people, vampires, the living dead, doorways to other worlds – even venturing close to the Gates of Hell itself! Do you want to go along with him on his adventures? This book will take you with him, but be ready to be creeped out. If this type of book bothers you, then you may want to choose something else to read, because this book will get to you. You will think about some of these places long after you put the book down.

The book is full of fantastic illustrations done by artist Ian Daniels. They are worth the purchase of the book alone. Some of them are very beautiful, while others will send chills up and down your spine. Ok, most of them will send chills up and down your spine. You can get a feeling for the illustrations by looking at the cover picture of the book. They are wonderful and add so much to the stories within.

I recommend this book as a great read for the Halloween season, but really this is a great book for any time of the year if you enjoy scary tales that may be true, or not. You decide. You can’t go wrong with this one. Enjoy!

Get this book from Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. As of this writing there is no Kindle or Nook versions.
