The Tower of London - Residual Hauntings

The Tower of London - Residual Hauntings

The Tower of London holds many fascinating and eerie secrets behind its somber, grey walls. This awesome palace (once residence of the Kings and Queens of England) and fortress of old was erected in 1066-87 with the largest 'White Tower' as its first building.

In the mid 16th century it became known as the 'Bloody Tower' when it was suspected that the imprisoned 'Princes in the Tower' (child sons of King Edward IV and nephews of Ricard III) had also become victims of the countless and brutal murders which the tower has become famous.

On entering the Tower of London through the Middle and Byward towers, you carry on through 'Traiter's Gate'. This river entrance is where many prisoners, including Queen Anne Boleyn (King Henry VIII's second wife) and her brother travelled to their doom... be it the dungeons, or to the Wakefield Tower where merciless regimes of torture were carried out.

Queen Anne Boleyn (it is believed by many) was falsely accused of treason, witchcraft, adultery and incest with her brother after Henry VIII became convinced their marriage was cursed when Anne could not bear him the son he longed for.

He was determined to be rid of Anne and pave the way for Jane Seymour to became his third wife...the only one to later bear him a son (Edward VI - 1537-1553).

Henry ordered the arrest of five men he accused of being Anne's lovers, which also included her brother. Every one of them denied this claim until tortured.

The five men were executed on Tower Hill on May 17th 1536...Anne Boleyn followed them two days later. It was said that she met her end with the dignity and beauty she was famed for during her short life.

Many of the guards of the tower have witnessed Anne Boleyn's ghost. One evening a guard reported watching as Anne lead a courtly procession across the tower green and on towards Tower Hill where she had been executed.

On another occasion, a group of guards where horrified when her apparition appeared so close - one of them was able to prod at the image before it faded before them.

The guards ('Yeoman of the Guard') have watched the towers since 1509, therefore, it is hardly surprising that many have a ghostly tale to tell. One of the most noted is that of the ghost of King Henry VI.

At the age of 49 yrs the King was savagely murdered in the Wakefield Tower whilst in his chambers in 1471 as he knelt in prayer. It is wrote: "the hour before midnight the King was stikk'ed full of deadly holes, wielded by the Duke of Gloucester".

On the anniversary of Henry VI's death, his apparition has been seen on many annual occasions by guards. They say he paces the floors of the Wakefield Tower as the clock reaches the hour of his death... then as the clock chimes the last second of midnight, he fades into the stone walls... until the following year.

What Are Residual Hauntings?

www.netplaces.com If the same apparition is seen over and over again, doing exactly the same thing, if the same sounds are heard at the same time of day, if the same scene plays out over and over again over a period of years or even centuries, it is a residual haunting. Also called energy remnants and memory imprint, the apparition in a residual haunting never interacts with onlookers, but rather seems totally oblivious to them. What Are Residual Hauntings? Perhaps residual hauntings are simply playbacks of past events. The apparitions involved may not even be actual spirits but just impressions or recordings of events that were so traumatic that they have become imprinted on the very materials of the space in which they occurred. There are many theories regarding residual hauntings. One of the first to offer a possible hypothesis of how residual hauntings occur was Thomas Charles Lethbridge, in his 1961 book Ghost and Ghoul. His theory is that just as audiotapes and videotapes record sounds and images, certain materials used in the construction of older structures may record impressions of events. If a traumatic, emotionally charged incident occurs, these materials record it for future playback. The event can suddenly occur and play out without an apparent cause. Sometimes there is no visual component to the event, only repetitive sounds, such as footsteps, breathing, or smells that have no apparent cause. No one knows what triggers the playback of these recordings. It ...

Help Edit This Halloween Story?

Question by Denver: Help Edit This Halloween Story?
Ok I've been helping my little brother edit this story for class.
And now we're totally lost.
His teacher wants him to make a Halloween story.
Tell me if he needs to :
Add Something.
Delete Something.
Please try to remember he is only in 6th grade.
Its Not A Poem.
I'm writing it and I write weird. (:
Just tell me if it needs anything.
I'll tell him in some hours to fix it. (:
Don't tell me 'It's Fine'
He and I know it's not fine.
He said he needs more Dialogue

Here it begins :

It was a chilly, foggy night.
The moon was high.
The sky was dark.
All I could see were faint lights, and glowing from Halloween decorations in peoples lawn.

There were two people with me.
John, Jill, and me, George.
John, was Jill's little brother.
John was short and clumsy.
Jill was weird and creepy.
I am strand and funny.

We were all going trick or treating.
We were on a street we've never been on.
There were lots of houses with decorations of BIG pumpkins , and tiny pumpkins.
Haunted Houses flickered on and off.

I heard screaming, laughter, and music.
I smelt pumpkins, candy, and popcorn.
Kids, passing by with pillow cases ful of candy.

One hour later we were done...
All the houses were done.

"How do we get out of this place?" John said tiredly.

"I know a short cut!" Jill said

"Lets go then," I intisapated

Jill lead us down to the woods

It was so dark that we had too use glow sticks.
It was so dark we couldn't even see ourselves.

"We're lost!" John said.
"No we're not." Jill said angerly.

She was right.
She knew the woods very well.

We walked around and around.
Trying to find a way to get out.
We stumbled and fell on roots.
The crunching of leaves, and twigs under out feet.
The pitter patter of animals feet.

Twent - some minutes later, the glow sticks ran out.
We were now lost!
We had no way to get out of the woods.
I looked in the back of me, glowing like, lights.
Very faint.

Look," I said surrprisingly. "Lights everywhere!"

Maybe there are people," Jill said "They could help us get out."

We were trying to get closer and closer.
After we were about three feet, we heard fimiliar voices, voices we knew.

"SHHH!"

....

I heard, I turned around and saw Jill and John shrugging.

After the 'shhh' the lights went out. I was scared.

"What do we do?" Jill whispered.

"Well, we still can go near the light that was there." I replied

We all walkedd toward it.
As we moved the small branches infront of us, everone jumped out.

"Surprise!!"

Jill, John, and I fell to out feet.
Everyone there were our friends.
It was a Halloween Party.
I saw Ghost, Vampires, Zombiess, Fairys.
The weirdest one I saw was the Burger King Man.

After about an hour.
Everone was gone.
It was empty.

this time we knew out way back.
The Halloween Party was on our street.

We said out 'Good Byes' and 'This was the best halloween ever' with a sack of candy on our back.
And we went out opposite ways.

The End.
It's sopose to be spelled wrong.
It's a kids book.

i always have dreams of this place, until i saw the picture i had never seen i before.?

Question by be nice, i like to report people: i always have dreams of this place, until i saw the picture i had never seen i before.?
i had 4+ dreams of this place: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:London_Temple_Church.JPG without ever seeing it until i found this pic after the dreams. 1 was that i had a sort of mission and got there by flying......on a potter-type broom..lol....... after that was a field trip from school where we learned that some parts of the castle were haunted and we heard "demonic" voices & i said "i remember this place!" later 1 was that i couldn't fly but other people could, and they made fun of me. then some white birds(possibly doves) took me and flew me there, and i was being watched by some scary person on the ground in front of the castle...the most resent was that there were trees attacking my summer camp. the ghosts were mad at us and told trees to throw fire at us. while we were putting out the fire on the road (by throwing sticks/twigs/branches at it) a bunch of people ran up to a field in front of a building where outside everyone (mostly adults) were talking about what to do, then someone shouted something lie "hurry, the doors are opening" and the wall started to slide open. someone was holding my hand and said to someone else we should go where the trees cant see us (she looked/talked like aunt jackie from Roseanne lol) she ran to the "IN" (it looked like this http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:London_Temple_Church.JPG ) and she was so fast that i was waving in the air behind her (LOL) then when we got there i saw the sign that said "IN" & freaked out like, "no, no, no, not here, i just had a flash back" (took a while to get the word, flash back) then we were inside and went up to a balcony where a guy that looked like a pope holding a golden Cross with 2 (fake) birds attached to it (also gold) came over and said something like "i heard what she said about flashbacks" and he talked about how i was probably kidnapped by "the birds" and brought there. unfortunately i woke up and wasn't able to finish this awesome/scary dream. (What do you people think of it!?)
the cross kind of looked like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gillianam/3075225470/ but only had the 2 birds at the top and they were attatched with a curved bar.
(Im a Christian, and its a Christian camp)

Q&A: I don't want to sound crazy but could this be a possible explanation for ghosts?

Question by Zed-0: I don't want to sound crazy but could this be a possible explanation for ghosts?
I thought that ghosts could actually be in the past and we are in the present and it somehow interfears with the present. We can hear them speak when they talk to a relative. They will hear us speak from the future and be afraid. They will move things and it moves it in the future. We will see them but only with the present back ground. And the reason I thought of this. Romby Martin was the 2nd person to be haunted on earth and she heard someone say, "What is this place?" in the exact words, it was what the ghost hunters said in her house. I seen it on the episode. I read a book about her than and it said she was the 2nd person to be haunted. Online it was really hard to find but when I found it, it sounded exactly like their voice. In 1722.
Well I mean sometimes it only interferese with us

Criticize my writing please?

Question by lawlman91: Criticize my writing please?
The golden and high palace walls watched over the Prince who strode across the red carpet, approaching the king.

"Yes, father?" the prince knelt before the king.

Sternly, the king declared, "Lead the Trident."

The prince's eyes widened with worry, "W-why?"

"Why?!" the king snapped, "You dare question orders?!"

"The Trident is a suicide mission, father."

The king remarked, "It is not."

The prince bottled rage, "By what statistics, father? We'll be outnumbered four-to-one. Why does the Trident even exist in the first place?"

"Listen to me," the king reassured, "You'll be all right, Stan. Gonza will assist you"

A tear rolled down Stan's face as he recognized the authority of the order, and the inevitability of dying with the all-out attack force, the Trident. He also recognized his own inability to lead, pra quality that had haunted him since adolescent awareness.

He had worried about becoming king in a few years because of his poor leadership. Now, he was immediately called to lead.

What is the scariest ghost footage you've ever seen?

Question by Variant7: What is the scariest ghost footage you've ever seen?
I used to love watching television shows about ghosts and the paranormal. I remember about 10 years ago there was a show on MTV called Fear, where some college-aged students would go ghost-hunting. Also, there were some other interesting shows which I forgot the name, something like "America's Scariest Places". And more recently, there's the show TAPS.

So, I'm just curious what's the scariest ghost or paranormal footage you've seen?

For me, it was one of the shows where a young group was ghost-hunting in like a dark basement of an old mental institution. When they walked by a doorway, they looked in with their cameras and saw an old filing cabinet - then, the drawer of the filing cabinet creaked and opened on it's own. Then, some white form briefly and quickly floated across the doorway which the camera caught on film. The young ghost-hunters were totally scared and freaked out. I would be too - being in the dark basement of an old abandoned and supposedly haunted insane asylum and experiencing something like that - yikes!

I'm being Haunted! HELP!!!?

Question by Mecha: I'm being Haunted! HELP!!!?
Every time I go to my "Happy Place" when I'm alone in my bedroom, weird shit happens! I start hearing wierd chanting sounds and the room shakes vigorously! Then, everytime I'm about to reach the climax, I see the ghost of an old nun standing over me! She throws the Bible at me and I release the white demons from down under!
What can I do to put the happy back in "Happy Time"? Should I rub my "one-eyed monster" with holy water before I start?
Please be serious! I'm scared!

Q&A: Seeing things that aren't there?

Question by Louise: Seeing things that aren't there?
My best friend has been acting weird and i'm the only one that noticed. She's been asking weird questions like "Has anyone ever died here?", " Did anyone see that?" etc.
I asked her about it and she told me she was seeing people/things. She said they were just standing there staring. I'm creeped out because i know she's not lying.

It all started about 2 weeks ago.The first time, me and our group of friends were sitting on a picnic table near the fenced forest area, and I saw her looking at a spot, she told me she had seen someone.

The second time was when we were at our grade trip, we were in our cabins at night and she was staring out the window. She started asking questions like " What would you guys do if you died here? Would you haunt this place?" or "Do any of you think anyone's died here?", everyone laughed it off, thinking she was just being paranoid because it was dark. I got scared and couldn't sleep.

The third time she was staring at the fenced forest area, and when I checked to see what she was looking at, she dragged me away saying i shouldn't go too close. She said she had a bad vibe, but she didn't tell me she saw anything.

And the last time was today, we were walking home from school,we were walking at our shortcut where everyone else goes, when I decided to explore and go to this small pond near, she stood there watching me, she told me to come back, sounding panicked. I kept asking her why and she told me she saw a thing, not a person, near me and freaked. She also kept asking if anyone else can smell "a weird ash smell". I didn't, but today I smelled something burning mixed with a really bad smell, and after I got a headache, and i'm not sure what it was.

My friend thinks she's going crazy and i am really scared. Is she going crazy? Is she really seeing ghosts? I'm sure she's not goin crazy and much rather believe the latter one. I need some sort of explanation? I'm not sure what I'm doing by asking on yahoo, but i am really frightened.

The Supernatural: Boy Blue Ghost

A true story about a supernatural experience by a real person, as told by the person. The names in all stories told are always changed. In this episode, a person has an experience in an old victorian home with a print of a painting by Thomas Gainsbourgh titled Blue Boy. It is possible he had an experience with what is called a residual haunting? Residual Hauntings are a therory that objects record events of individuals lives similar to that of a DVD recording. It can be any kind of object. A chair , a wall,, a ring ect. It may be just the image of the person or persons, or an ocurrence in that person's life. What trigers the recording to play is, as unkown, as is the possibility of the therory itself. Remember nae54

The 'secret' to Finding Ghosts

The 'secret' to Finding Ghosts

The 'Secret', a new movie about the 'Law of Attraction' is very popular right now. What it says is that we are always attracting things to ourselves either consciously or unconsciously, and the movie makes a persuasive case for that premise

What we talk about we attract into our lives. What we think about we are inviting into our lives. That's it in a nutshell.

When I saw the 'Secret' it made me wonder about Ghosts and Hauntings, because, hey, if you are thinking about Ghosts, and talking about Hauntings, then aren't you inviting them into your life too?

My son, Brian, runs a hobby site called Scareo.com and we spend a lot of time visiting haunted places to document what we can of Ghosts and Ghost stories. We are planning some big trips next year, like Waverly and Gettysburg. On those occasions we will lay out a sleeping bag on the battlefield, or in a spooky looking room, and spend the night, talking and taking pictures and recordings.

During these visits we think about Ghosts, talk about Ghosts and what indication there may be that they exist, and that they are near us.

Some evidence exists that people see what they expect to see, and as far as spiritual and mystical phenomena go, there was an interesting movie from 2002 called 'Mothman Prophecies'. In it the lead character visits an expert on the creatures visiting Point Pleasant West Virginia. He asks what causes the strange things happening to him and the expert says.

"You noticed them, they noticed that you noticed them".

It was a very eerie line, and it got worse as the expert outlines the possible future for the character from the movie, John Klein.

It seems that for a while, the whole town of Point Pleasant had Ghosts in mind, and they all reported seeing the 'Mothman' creatures for several years.

It's common in the urban legend type of haunting we find, too. These are the volunteers in restaurants, or on airplanes who want to tell us about the old house they lived in. Some people love to share their scary stories, and it's one of the most fun things about the hobby.

Lots of these stories sound familiar:

At first it's merely a cup that got displaced, later it's a shadow in a window, a few weeks later they have apparitions haunting the whole dwelling. Sometimes the Ghost will move a doll, or turn off a light, and the (human) resident will notice it, and even talk to the spirit.

There was a painter, I wish I could remember his name, wrote a book about his experiences. He went from town to town painting the local haunted houses, the owners would walk out to see the painting, often offer to buy it, and tell the story of the home. In the painters' book he related the same phenomenon, that the more attention you give the spirit, the more likely it will come.

So, after 15 years of looking, perhaps I can look forward to my first real encounter with a Ghost. And since I've heard it can be extremely terrifying the first time, maybe after it happens I'll quit looking.

Jeffrey Peterson runs a Health Insurance agency for California, Nevada and Utah. He helps his son, Brian, run Scareo.com a Ghost investigation hobby site.
