What do atheists experience during near death experiences?

Well, I was almost ran over while visiting NY. And let me tell you I was pretty focused on the 1000 pound bullet speeding towards me.
Sex.
I’m sure it would be a monkey eating it’s last banana?
No, ah forget about it.
I would imagine we’d hallucinate that we aren’t dying!
I think each person sees what is familiar to them.
Hold your breath. Around the 50 second mark, slam your head into a table and close your eyes.
I only know one and he experienced nothing while medically dead. Although afterward he experienced an offer of cash from writer Kevin Williams in exchange for making up a story about having gone to either heaven or hell.
I actually have Williams’ business card with the offer written on the back. He’s a slimy fraud.
I think it’s like when your going through trauma and time appears to slow, your brain is kinda playing games with reality to help you accept it in my view.
But this is only my opinion.
Flashes of light caused by lack of oxygen.
I don’t remember anything of the slightly-before dead to definitely-dead period, but the drugs they pumped me full of after they revived me did give me some trippy ideas. I remember I thought the big power plugs in the IC room were scorpions, in a bemused way. Like "what are scorpions doing in a hospital?".
I hope my next (and less involuntary shutdown) will have a proper light show, at least.
Pretty much just clouds!
I was drowning, and everything just went kind of fuzzy looking, but oddly peaceful. No hellfire or Heaven to speak of.
This is the most stupid, ignorant, loaded question I have seen today. Congratuations.
By the way, Christian, how was your Halloween?
My father claims to be protestant, but has admitted to me that he doesn’t really believe. He had a near death experience once, and told me it was like being asleep without dreaming. That is to say, he experienced nothing at all.
nothing religious
thats for sure
Mmm I just think: "Holy shit I almost died"
But I don’t see invisible guys talking to me.
Invisible pink unicorns and spahghetti monsters.
There are elements that are similar with all of them. Tunnel vision, feeling like you remember your whole life, bright lights, and so on are all symptoms of oxygen deprivation to the brain. It actually happens in high gravity situations sometimes: http://www.near-death.com/experiences/triggers06.html
Most atheists have just that type of experience and don’t read anything into it.
I would think I would hallucinate about my characters, or hallucinate about loved ones telling me I’ll be alright.
(toke) The pig is coming!
I would say something equivalent to an LSD trip
some people say they’ve seen their whole life flash before their eyes. for me i hope it’ll only be the good parts. what a way to go:-) i’d imagine this would probably be true for all people, and that would probably be what people claim to see when they say they see heaven. i assume it’s like dreaming. by that i mean i’ve heard people say dreams actually happen rather quickly, although they seem to last for hours. maybe it’s all some trick by our brains to help us deal with the pain of dying.
I know a Franciscan monk who claims to know an atheist who experienced Judgement during a near-death experience.
However, this guy’s pretty literal in his interpretations…. I don’t put much stock in it.
i experienced an overpowering ‘oh sh1t’ feeling because i’d miss my daughter and other loved ones, and felt super aware of everything. its kinda weird to explain. no clouds, no bright lights at the end of a tunnel, no visions of others that have died before me, just…’oh sh1t, you have to be kidding me…i’m not gonna get to see my baby grow up’
They would see the exact same thing and a christian would. They’d just interpret it differently.
Fill 3 bowls with water.
In one bowl, put ice cold water
In another bowl, put heated water
In the middle bowl, put room temperature water
Have one person dunk their hand in the cold water.
Have another person dunk their hand in the hot water
Leave them there for about 45 seconds
Now have them both put their hands in the middle bowl.
Now ask them if the water their hands are in is warm or cool.
one will say the water is cool.
the other will say the water is warm.
It’s the same water. They just feel/interpret it a different way.
I’ve died and been revived twice. I saw absolutely nothing. No dreams, no hallucinations, nothing. I didn’t even know I had been dead till the doctors told me.
I went through a dark tunnel and when I emerged, warm spaghetti noodles began wrapping themselves around me. It was orgasmic. And there were little babby cherubs singing very beautiful songs about how great I was…
