New video has been released that shows the formation of a brinicle on the ocean floor. Essentially an underwater icicle, the brinicle, or “finger of death,” freezes everything in its path.

Hugh Miller and Doug Anderson filmed the stunning time-lapse clip below, which is apparently the first of its kind. Shot for the BBC’s “Frozen Planet,” the clip was recorded using a special time-lapse camera that caught the brinicle’s entire formation process.

What’s really going on here is the freezing of warmer waters as sub-zero brine slowly sinks to the ocean floor.

From the BBC:

The temperature of this sinking brine, which was well below 0C, caused the water to freeze in an icy sheath around it.

Where the so-called “brinicle” met the sea bed, a web of ice formed that froze everything it touched, including sea urchins and starfish.

Gizmodo describes brinicles as “columns of ice that form under very calm ocean conditions, when there’s a big differential between the water temperature (around -1.9C) and the air temperature about the sea ice (below -20C).”

Miller and Anderson captured the brinicle’s formation near Little Razorback Island, close to Antarctica’s Ross Archipelago. The duo found a number of fully formed brinicles close to the site before finding one in the process of forming.

These ice formations were known as ice stalactites until 1974, when Martin Seelye developed the now generally accepted theory of their formation.

Know Thyself: Self Discovery as a Path to Happiness

Many years ago when the fountain of all knowledge could be found in Greece, there was an inscription in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. This inscription simply read “Know Thyself” and has become one of the most well known and often quoted sayings of all time.

This statement is the reason why every year you see students graduating from High School or College going to Europe to “find themselves”, seeking self-discovery in the experience of history. Knowing Thyself has even been called the “secret to happiness” by many, prompting people to try many different avenues of finding out who and what they are. The great news is that this kind of self-discovery is good, it’s healthy and actually might very well be the key to happiness.

But can you answer the question? If someone walked up to you right now and asked “Who are you?” what would you say? Most people would probably start with their name but you’re not your name are you? If that doesn’t work they say their job or profession but again, you’re not your job or your profession. At long last a few people get to the point of saying that they are their body but that doesn’t work either. After all you call it “your” body so who is you?

Well if by now you haven’t got a headache then congratulations because you’ve answered a question that has puzzled millions of people for a very long time. The truth is that I cannot give you an answer to those questions. It’s called self-discovery because there is only one person who can discover who you really are and that is you. What I am here to tell you though is that true self-discovery is not a destination, but a journey, and it’s this journey that is so important to your happiness and fulfillment. That’s why so many people go travel in order to “find themselves”, it’s not that they literally think that who they are is to be found in Rome, or in Paris, but their intuition is telling them to take a journey and they translate that the best way they know how, they travel.

The problem with that approach is that it isn’t a journey to be taken on the outside. Now i’m not saying that people shouldn’t travel and see the world, nor am I saying that traveling the world won’t expand your horizons or contribute to your own self-discovery. What I am saying is that the journey you have to take is one within yourself. Read inspirational and mind expanding books, watch only the most joyful or inspirational movies, listen to programs that will grow your sphere of consciousness. Who you are, what you are and what you are here to accomplish is a truth that is like a giant crop circle. From the ground, walking around, you may be able to get some small idea what it looks like, maybe even a really good idea. But to really understand you have to get into a plane and see the whole picture. The more you expand your horizons, the more you work on yourself the higher you’ll go in that plane and the more of the crop circle you’ll be able to see at one time.

But can you guess what the point of this all is? Have you caught it? It’s not that at the end you can see the whole crop circle, or that you truly “know thyself”. It’s that in the process you’ve learned to fly! That is why self discovery is a journey and not a destination, because in reality you may never see the full picture. The point is that you continue on this journey and learn to fly higher and higher in the process. It’s the people that do that very thing that look back on their lives in the end and smile, truly happy and having no regrets because they’ve reached hights they didn’t even know they were capable of. It may be a journey that will take your entire life — but it’s one you can’t afford to miss out on.
