Well, so far, a sheep seer in New Zealand named Sonny Wool is keeping skeptics from saying “bah” — for now.

Sonny Wool, a three-year-old, made a prediction before the first game of the Rugby World Championship that the All Blacks, as the Kiwi team is known, would beat Tonga.

Turns out, the Kiwi team handily beat the Tonga players 41-10.

The predictions were made in a method similar to the one used by Paul the Psychic Octopus, who successfully predicted all of Germany’s wins and one loss in the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Basically, owner and agent Dan Boyd set up two boxes of hay, each in front of the flag of the two countries, and Sonny Wool — who is named after All Blacks center Sonny Bill Williams — chose to nibble the hay in front of the New Zealand flag instead of the one representing Tonga.

“It sniffed around Tonga and then it walked to New Zealand, with a bit of coaxing from the crowd,” an onlooker told France24.com. “It would have been in the oven if it chose Tonga, so it chose wisely.”

Of course, predicting Tonga wouldn’t have been the smart bet anyway, considering the All Blacks have won all three previous games against them by an average of 74 points.

Despite being a loyal fan of the home team, Boyd insists there was no bias, according to Stuff.co.nz.

“We want to make this as fair as possible,” Boyd said. “So the food is the same.” In addition, Boyd says that if Sonny Wool picks Japan over New Zealand, he will, to paraphrase Tammy Wynette, stand by his lamb.

“The next game is against Japan [on Sept. 16], and if he picks Japan then they will be the team to win,” Boyd said.

Sonny Wool’s previous predictions were regarding rain, but they were successful enough to inspire Boyd to see if the sheep psychic’s abilities could be transferred to sports — or at least get some publicity.

“He’s a special sheep and it probably stems from when his mum was pregnant and she had a condition,” the Telegraph reported. “His sister Maggie is actually blind and he’s a bit socially inept. He’s got a few fetishes for things — one is light at night and he really likes rugby balls so that’s where he gets his name from, Sonny Wool.”

Whether Sonny Wool is pulling the wool over people’s eyes remains to be seen, but it’s a safe prediction that he — and his owner — will make hay as long as they can.

Still, even with all his success, you’d think he wouldn’t pass up a chance to earn a quick million bucks, right?

If you predicted yes, your answer would be wrong — at least up to now.

That’s because the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) has issued a challenge to Van Praagh and other people who claim to have psychic ability: It will pay $ 1 million for anyone who can produce evidence of paranormal abilities under controlled conditions.

It’s not a new deal by any means: The Foundation has made this offer since it was founded in 1996 “to expose charlatans and help people defend themselves from paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.”

So far, no one has been able to collect on the money, not even a well known psychic like Van Praagh, whom the organization is singling out in order to capitalize on his particularly devastating appearance on a recent episode of “ABCâ??s Primetime Nightline: Beyond Belief,” a one-hour special that explored whether such a thing as psychic ability exist.

During the episode, Van Praagh performed a reading on “Good Morning America” anchor Josh Elliott.

Although Elliott initially appeared surprised by Van Praaghâ??s accuracy, he revealed that â??every talking point of the readingâ? seemed to have been lifted from a two-year-old interview with Elliott that was available online.

“I’d known there was plenty of information regarding my past readily available with a cursory Internet search, including an extensive interview that included all the talking points [such as] my dead relatives and my adoption,” Elliot said during the show. “Except, I thought, for [my mom's boyfriend] Leo.”

Elliott rechecked that interview when he got home from interviewing Van Praagh and discovered that interview had a reference to Leo’s passing, “able to be exploited along with the rest.”

During the show, Van Praagh denied using Google, but declined to do a reading on Elliot’s segment producer, claiming he had become too tired.

In a later part of the show, Allison DuBois, who appeared on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and is also billed as the inspiration for the CBS drama “Medium,” performed a similar reading on ABC News correspondent David Wright as did self-proclaimed medium Rebecca Rosen.

Both readings focused on Wrightâ??s family and his late mother. Wright was surprised by their accuracy and said they revealed â??details that donâ??t pop up on Google.â?

Yet, shortly after the show aired, a Twitter user posted a link to a wedding announcement from The New York Times that contained the relevant details about the Wright family.

JREF founder James Randi makes no claims of intuitive ability, but his gut tells him that both Van Praagh and DuBois “should be embarrassed by the transparent performances they revealed to the world on last nightâ??s show.â?

Randi would like those two — and other psychics — to put their alleged powers to the test under scientific conditions and not rely on “cold reading,” a technique that uses questions to get key points to focus on, for example, through prompts like, “I see a woman with an ‘M’ in her name…?”

Although cold reading in itself isn’t bad — as long as it is labeled as such or presented as a party trick — Randi is disgusted by how Van Praagh and DuBois use it to “prey on familiesâ?? deepest fears and regrets,â? he said.

To be fair to Van Praagh, there are some academics who claim his powers hold up under scientific scrutiny such as Dr. Gary Schwartz, a former Yale professor now at the University of Arizona.

“I’ve been very impressed,” Schwartz said on the “Primetime Nightline” episode. “He is real and accurate and, on the average, among the best of the mediums I’ve seen.”

Randi may be skeptical about psychic powers in general, but he figures the easiest way to prove him wrong is for real psychics to take up the challenge.

“If anyone does have psychic powers, and can prove it [the money is there],” he said. “I am surprised people aren’t hammering down my door.”

HuffPost Weird News reached out to Van Praagh for a comment about his performance on the ABC show and any plans to take Randi up on the $ 1 million challenge. So far, there has been no response — something Randi predicted.

“All these guys — Van Praagh, DuBois, Uri Geller — they know we know how to set up a test,” he laughed. “Whenever Uri Geller or Van Praagh are asked about the test, they change the subject.”

Another guy who does “cold readings,” John Edward, was once asked about the challenge and, according to Randi, he said, “I never talk about a guy whose name is also a verb.”

Randy said, “The interviewer laughed and changed the subject.”

Countless movies, stories, and tales have spun gold out of the concept of extrasensory perception (often referred to as ESP). Consider popular television shows and films like Medium and The Sixth Sense. People are fascinated with the paranormal – Ouija boards and tarot card readings, once considered taboo and even somewhat dark – are now popular games sold in Toys R Us. But with all this talk and publicity, much of the origin and science of extrasensory perception has been obscured. The actual definition of extrasensory perception is the “ability to acquire information by means other than the five canonical senses (taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing), or any other sense well-known to science (balance, proprioception, etc)”, but there are several different types of ESP, as well as interpretations of it.

Before getting into all the different ideas and challenges associated with extrasensory perception, let’s first consider the history of ESP. The concept itself goes way back, far before popular culture turned it into a cultural phenomenon of sorts. In fact, in many past cultures (i.e. ancient China and Egypt), it was simply expected that people could communicate mentally with others, including the dead, gods, and other supernatural spirits. While this possibility has been heavily criticized as, at best, speculation and at worst, pure superstition, plenty of accounts (both ancient and relatively recent) have described incidents of extrasensory perception, as well as everyday use of it for divination.

So, the big question is: Do people actually have ESP and can it be proved? Many paranormal scientists have run experiments to test the veracity of alleged psychic abilities and many have come out shocked and amazed at the results. It seems that ESP may be a little more likely than anyone previously thought. In fact, some paranormal studies have found that alleged psychics seem able to foretell the contents of sealed envelopes and accurately draw images identical to those of people drawing the same image from a remote locale. Parapsychology (especially the area of extrasensory studies) has grown both in venerability and believer population. In fact, many large universities now have Parapsychology programs including Edinburgh University in Scotland.

Most claims of psychic readings and abilities are similar to the three most commonly reported extrasensory happenings which include telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition. Telepathy is defined as mental communication between two or more people. It entails one person sending or receiving thoughts to or from another person via some sort of mental or emotional link.

Clairvoyance is often called a “second sight” or a “sixth sense” — that is to say, the person perceives events happening in a location other than his or her present one, without having any previous knowledge of the event. For example, a clairvoyant person may sense that something is wrong with a friend or a family member to find that he or she was in trouble. They also may “know” that their house is being robbed as they are out to dinner. Precognition, on the other hand, is also known as “fortune telling” or “foresight” and entails the ability to know or predict what will happen in the future. Many prophets (including very false ones) have risen to fame – and even religious worship — through their apparent ability to predict the events of the future.
