  1. Ankur TG says:

The reactions of people will vary from curiosity to hysteria, but there will be a general sense of doubt and insecurity, which may lead to a lot of general confusion. Scientists may be surprised to receive a lot of criticism and interrogation from religious groups and people.

Such information therefore is regarded as highly sensitive.
The SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute has a fixed protocol of what steps to take if proof of ETI is found.
    1. Is it really extraterrestrial?
    2. Get confirmation from other astronomers. (If extraterrestrial, tell your government about it).
    3. If convincing: announce to International Astronomical Union, Secretary General of the UN, inform SETI groups.
    4. Make the first public announcement
    5. Make data available to all.
    6. Everyone carefully record & disseminate signals
    7. Protect frequencies.
    8. Don't broadcast back to the ETs! Requires Debate.
    9. Study signals. The SETI Committee of the International Academy of Astronautics keeps a list of experts to call on.

People all around the world would go, "man, Dubya is getting pretty desperate at this whole denial and attention-diversion thing! Next thing he's gonna do is label them an Axis of Evil."

  3. ZORCH says:

You mean the U.S. Government? Who would speak for it? Bush? Well, we would all believe him wouldn't we. Or Gore? He has an academy award after all. Maybe the CIA? You would have to start out by finding someone in the U.S. government that we would all agree tells the truth all the time. Donno who that would be, right off hand.

The church would be very concerned I am sure! I guess it also depends if they are friendly or want to use us for replacement parts and what can we do about it!

  5. S P says:

They wouldn't, it would cause untold civil problems and put the international community is dissaray. I think a lot of people would be in denial about it, and conspiracy theorists would sing, do cartwheels, and have large parades. A lot of people would panic of course, but it would depend on the circumstances surrounding the recovery of said craft.

My personal reaction would be, mixed surprise, at the government admitting such a thing. I would probably put a big banner "I Told You So!" as well.
