The Bell Witch is named so because the creature haunted the Bell Family. No one seems to know if the creature was male or female.

This happened back in the 1800's. After the patriarch of the family (John Bell) died, it was said that the creature disappeared, having stated that it would stop haunting the family when he (John Bell) died.

The creature also took a liking to Mrs. Bell very much (the reason was unknown). It was said that when Mrs. Bell was sick in bed, that the creature went out in the woods and found some berries that Mrs. Bell liked, hoping in entice Mrs. Bell to eat in order to get her strength back and to feel better. It was also said that the creature took to singing hymns which Mrs. Bell used to like, in order to make the sick woman feel better and to get better. After Mrs. Bell recovered, the creature stopped singing and bringing her berries to eat.

    It's really an interesting story.

By the way, the movie from 2006 "An American Haunting" is based on the Bell Witch legend, but please, if you see the movie, please know that IT IS NOT BASED ON FACT – THE MOVIE IS A WRITER'S IMAGINATION.

Have a lovely rest of the day.

Well it was a haunting experienced by the Bell family in Adams Tennessee during the years 1817 and 1821. Supposedly the spirit could speak and caused a lot of mayhem. Also that it was witness by a lot of people. The only reason they said it was female, because it was then believed that the bell witch was some one called Kate Batts. An eccentric neighbor of John Bell. Who had sued him that he had cheated her in a land deal (she was dead at the time the paranormal stuff happened) But in reality nobody seems to know if it the "voice " was male of female.
