Your wife is correct, she is asking questions that are logical, rational, and science based. Most of such postings on you tube are for entertainment. This article is about the astronomical hypothesis. For the "Planet X" doomsday scare, see ZetaTalk. For other uses, see Planet X (disambiguation).
In astronomy, Planet X is a large hypothetical planet beyond Neptune. It was postulated to explain apparent discrepancies in the orbits of the gas giants, especially those of Uranus and Neptune. Those discrepancies were mostly resolved by measurements made in the 1980s.[1]
The "X" in the name represents an unknown and is pronounced as the letter, as opposed to the Roman numeral for ten. At the time of its conception there were eight known planets in the solar system; its existence, first as a ninth planet, and then from 1930 until its demise as a tenth. Although Pluto was discovered as a result of the search for Planet X, it is not considered Planet X. Neither is Eris, even though it was at one point considered for reclassification as a planet under a proposal outlined by the International Astronomical Union (see 2006 redefinition of planet).
In popular culture, "Planet X" has become a stand-in term for an undiscovered planet in the solar system.

[edit] Origin of the discrepancy
See also: Discovery of Neptune
At the beginning of the 20th century, many astronomers speculated about the existence of a planet beyond Neptune. The discovery of Neptune resulted from calculations of the mathematicians John Couch Adams and Urbain Le Verrier to explain discrepancies between the calculated and observed orbits of Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter.
After the discovery of Neptune, however there still were some slight discrepancies in those orbits, and also in the orbit of Neptune itself. These were taken to indicate the existence of yet another planet orbiting beyond Neptune.
Percival Lowell, who is most well known for his claims of having observed canals on Mars, called this hypothetical planet "Planet X". He performed two searches for it without success, the first ending in 1909, and after revising his prediction for where it should be found, the second from 1913 to 1915, after which Lowell published his mathematical hypothesis of the parameters for Planet X. Ironically, at his observatory that year, two faint images of Pluto were recorded, but were not recognized at the time.[2]
[edit] Discovery of Pluto
Lowell died in 1916, but in 1928 the Lowell Observatory began another search, which ended with the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.
Upon its discovery, Pluto was originally thought to be Planet X, but its mass was not sufficient to explain Neptune's orbit, so the search continued.

After discovering Pluto, Tombaugh continued to search the ecliptic for other distant planets. He found asteroids, variable stars, and even a comet, but no more planets.
In the 1980s and 1990s, astronomer Robert Sutton Harrington of the US Naval Observatory, who had first calculated that Pluto was too small to have perturbed the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, led a search to determine the real cause of the planets' apparently irregular orbits.[3] He calculated that any Planet X would be at roughly three times the distance from the sun of Neptune's orbit, highly elliptical, and far below the ecliptic (the planet's orbit would be at roughly a 90-degree angle from the orbital plane of the other known planets).[4] This hypothesis was met with a mixed reception. Noted Planet X skeptic Brian Marsden of Harvard University's Minor Planet Center has pointed out that these discrepancies are a hundred times smaller than those noticed by Adams and Le Verrier, and could easily be due to observational error.[3]
In 1972, Joseph Brady of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory studied irregularities in the motion of Halley's Comet. Brady claimed that they could have been caused by a Jupiter-sized planet beyond Neptune that orbited the Sun backward. However, both Marsden and Planet X proponent P. Kenneth Seidelmann attacked the hypothesis, showing that Halley's Comet jetted randomly and irregularly, causing changes to its own orbital trajectory, and that such a massive object as Brady's Planet X would have severely affected the orbits of the outer planets.[3]
While its mission did not involve a search for "Planet X", the IRAS space observatory made headlines briefly in 1983 due to an "unknown object" that was at first described as "possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth that it would be part of this solar system."[5][6] However, further analysis revealed that of several unidentified objects, nine were distant galaxies and the tenth was "intergalactic cirrus".[7] None were found to be Solar System bodies.[7]
[edit] Kuiper belt
After Pluto and Charon (discovered in 1978), no more trans-Neptunian objects were found until the discovery of (15760) 1992 QB1 in 1992. Since that time, hundreds of trans-Neptunian objects have been discovered. The objects are now recognized as mostly belonging to the Kuiper belt: a swarm of icy bodies orbiting in the ecliptic plane beyond Neptune, which are left over from the formation of the Solar System.
In 2005, astronomer Mike Brown and his team announced the discovery of 2003 UB313, a trans-Neptunian object larger than Pluto. Soon after the announcement, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory put out a press release describing the object as the "tenth planet";[8] however, its status was not decided until the following year, when the IAU created a separate category for it and similar objects, "dwarf planet".[9] The planet has since been named "Eris".[10] Pluto itself is now recognized as being a member of the Kuiper belt, and the second largest dwarf planet after Eris. Pluto lost its status as a planet in 2006 because it failed to meet the new IAU definition of a planet, which would require it to have cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. Regardless of whether or not Eris is a planet, it is not and never was Planet X, as it is far too small to have affected the orbits of the outer planets in any way.
[edit] Planet X disproved
Harrington died in 1993, having never found Planet X.[3] That same year, Myles Standish used data from Voyager 2's 1989 flyby of Neptune, which had revised the planet's total mass downward by 0.5 percent, to recalculate its gravitational effect on Uranus.[11] When the newly determined mass was used in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Developmental Ephemeris (JPL DE), the supposed discrepancies in its orbit vanished.[1]
Also, to date there are no discrepancies in the trajectories of any space probes (Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2) that can be attributed to the gravitational pull of a large undiscovered object in the outer solar system.[12]

The search for Planet X may not be over yet. The Kuiper Belt terminates suddenly at a distance of 55 AU from the Sun, and there is some speculation this sudden dropoff may be caused by the presence of an object with a mass between that of Mars and Earth located beyond 55 AU. Patryk Lykawka, astronomer at Kobe University, Japan, claims that we will discern this object's existence or lack thereof by 2013.[13] Lykawka's computer simulations suggest that a body roughly the size of Earth, ejected outward by Neptune early in the Solar System's formation and currently set in elongated orbit between 80 and 170 AU from the Sun, could explain not only the Kuiper cliff but also the peculiar "detached" TNOs such as 90377 Sedna. While some astronomers have cautiously supported Lykawka's claims, others have dismissed them as contrived.[13]
An alternative theory, proposed in 1999 by John Murray of the Open University and John Matese, Patrick Whitman and Daniel Whitmire of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, has long period comets originating from specific regions of the sky, rather than coming from random directions as proposed by Oort. This would result from comets being disturbed by an unseen object at least as large as Jupiter, and possibly a brown dwarf.[14]
There's no evidence that it's real. If you want some evidence, post the coordinates and try to get someone to take a picture of it. If it were going to hit us in 4 or 5 years, it would certainly be visible.
Real scientists don't post their research on youtube. That should have been your first clue.
There simply isn't any evidence about this mysterious Planet X, and there isn't anything that this Masters fellow brings to light that is even remotely scientific.
It's all supposition, speculation and – frankly – nonsense.
I know you won't believe me because there's no way to change the mind of a true believer ("my mind is made up, don't bother me with silly things like facts") but if true believers would stop and just think for a moment, rather than take the word of some self-styled subversive propaganda artists, then they may come to a reasonable, rational conclusion.
But true believers won't. It's very sexy to believe subversive press over common sense and mainstream rationality, but it's got nothing to do with reality.
I hate to disabuse the reality challenged of their dreams of global destruction, but there isn't a planet X on its way to kill you. Any websites you might find will be bogus. The thing about the internet is that anyone can declare themselves an expert on anything and set up a website. Here's a hint: go to your library and ask to use a bibliographic database to search scientific journals. Plug in planet X or Niburu. You aren't going to get any respected refereed journals with articles on this subject. Are they keeping it a secret? Or is planet X bogus?
Look in the sky if you ca not see it with your naked eye by now it does not exist. There are thousands of telescopes searching the sky nightly and no one has ever spotted a giant planet making it's way into our solar system. If this planet did exist we would be able to see it with the naked eye by now. So where is it?
Your wife sounds like a smart lady, why she married such a fool is beyond me.
go with what your wife has to say.
Of course Planet X and all the other so-called "doomsday prophecies" are a load of hooey…
However, if you don't soon learn the fundamental theorem of matrimonial harmony (that is that your wife is always right), you are soon going to face a very REAL doomsday scenario designed especially for you… and the last hobby that you have listed on your profile is going to work to significantly speed this process…
By the way folks, he's not a sucker – he's a poet and a salesman!! QED…
Masters is a nut. Or perhaps to be kind, he is a scam artist looking to make money off a hoax. There is no such planet. To bring it to anyone's attention simply labels you a jerk, a sucker, and a fool who wastes others' time on nonsense.
But Al Mosco.. has the wisest answer
there is no compelling evidence that it is real! infact, there is compelling evidence that it is not real.
1. it would be the third brightest object in the sky, next to the sun and the moon.
2. it would have an orbital speed of about 5 times more than earths. which makes no sense because inner planets orbit faster than outer ones.
3. if it has a 3600 year orbit or a 26000 year orbit (there are 2 massively different theories, which is more evidence that its wrong) and its only 4 years away then it would be so very close to us right now. it would be so bright.
4. brown dwarfs shine in the infrared. they are incredibly hot. we have seen no such infrared radiation.
5. it was supposed to come in 2003 and never did.
6. we have detected no gravitational influence from anything that could be deemed a rogue planet.
7. the man that came up with the "theory" (and its more or a hypothesis) has NO SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND!
I think it's real, they have pictures from the South Pole and it will become visible to the naked eye by 2011-you'll have a year to prepare and your evidence right there. It's not on the news and scientists don't bring it up because it is being covered-up in order to prevent mass chaos. When you see the red light in the sky then it's time to worry.
It may not do much for your ego, but your wife is right and you are wrong. Even such a learned organization (HA HA!) as youtube gets it wrong sometimes. Try an experiment. Publish something yourself on youtube that you know to be totally false. I'll guarantee there will be questions here within a week.
That fact that it doesn't exist is a good place to start. The absence of published material in peer-reviewed scientific journals – or even more popular journals like Sky & Telescope, New Scientist or Scientific American – should tell you something.
If it was going to be in our vicinity in 2012 it would be a naked eye object now. Where is it?
I have comprehensive solid archaeological evidences that the planet x or nibiru is real. It has been coming to earth periodically. I have been doing serious research and my conclusion and findings are almost finished.
Theres no need for elaborate explanation to convince or to support, for the evidences speaks for itself. This is not a vague artifact, but a clear artifact in Africa that has been overlooked to my advantage.
This is not the only artifact the I have discovered, but to my surprise, there is more.
Wait for my documentary website. I'm sure your eyes will be opened as this will change the whole world.
Stay tuned.

Mark K., I urge you not to blindly accept the controverial demotion of Pluto, which does not have consensus in the world of astronomy. Pluto is still a planet, as is Eris. Only four percent of the IAU voted on the controversial demotion, and most are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately opposed by hundreds of professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto. One reason the IAU definition makes no sense is it says dwarf planets are not planets at all! It is inconsistent with the use of the term “dwarf” in astronomy, where dwarf stars are still stars, and dwarf galaxies are still galaxies. Also, the IAU definition classifies objects solely by where they are while ignoring what they are. If Earth were in Pluto’s orbit, according to the IAU definition, it would not be a planet either. A definition that takes the same object and makes it a planet in one location and not a planet in another is essentially useless. That is why many astronomers, lay people, and educators are either ignoring the demotion entirely or working to get it overturned.
Hello from Norway!
I am wondering why Norwegian government + Bill Gates are throwing away millions of $ on the “seedbank” in Spitsbergen. Norwegian best newspaper “Aftenposten” stated already many years ago that the goal is to save these seeds if any catastrophic event might occur.
To me it seems that this money is thrown out the window but I keep asking myself the question: Why was this seedbank built?
2012 is a non-existing issue in the media both in Norway and the rest of Europe.
I think it is still to early. There are other issues and everything´s about the money, the stock markets, world economy. So I stopped watching television months ago.
All you good people, we´ll find the truth in the years to come. “Believe in nothing”
