  1. pic_exec says:

The face looks too realistic to me. Skeptics say it's a coincidence. I think alien / intelligent life either resided on Mars or visited Mars.

It would be ludicrous and petty of us to believe "humans" are the only "intelligent" beings in the Universe.

    The face is real.

  2. Aviation_dude says:

I think that it's really something we should be concerned about…..if theres a real UFO we should go there and look.

  3. Bobby says:

    There's no cover- up, really.
It's just a unique rock formation that, when lit from the correct angle, gives the illusion of a human (sort of) face.
It's smoke and mirrors to the conspiracy people…
    Peace,
    Bobby

  4. Fusion says:

It's not anything unusual – it's just a natural geological phenomenon on Mars.

The original photos on this Mars "mystery" showed what appeared to be a face on Mars. However, the photos were somewhat fuzzy and image resolution wasn't extremely good – as compared to space probes launched today.

(Remember, back in 1976, when the image was taken, camera imaging equipment that wasn't as fine-tuned and precise as they are now.)

Anyway, later Mars probes re-visited and took a closer look at "the face on Mars", and they found that this wasn't anything but a series of 3-4 tall mountainous outcroppings that happen to be arranged just right, where the sun (at that time) was shining low in the horizon and at just the right angle to create shadows lending to what we'd see from above as – a "face".

If the oroginal photo were taken at a different time in the day, for example, we'd not have seen a "face" in those photo.

The following NASA site clarifies all this, with photos Then vs Now and more…

  5. David H says:

When it was discovered by a photograph taken by a satellite orbiting Mars in the 1970's, the sunlight was at just the right angle to look like a face, and that freaked a lot of people out. If NASA was trying to hide it, they wouldn't have released the photo to the public.

In the 1990's additional satellites have been sent to Mars that took photos of the same location and it looks nothing like a face because the sunlight was at a different angle, so now we know. There wasn't a coverup.

  6. johnbonnechappe says:

The old "face on Mars" joke has long been disproven.

The sharper cameras on the most recent satellites at mars clearly show a large rock formation that has been heavily eroded and looks nothing like a face.

It was fun for awhile though wasn't it?

  7. cbirch92 says:

i think that youve been looking at old photos. go find the ones that are higher resolution, youll see that theres no cover up.

is the man on the moon also made by aliens? is that a cover up?

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast24may_1.htm, there u can find the high res image.

  8. Raymond says:

I have no idea what is EVERYONE's opinion.
I do know that the better resolution pictures taken recently do show that it is the result of wind and erosion.

These are relatively common on planetary surfaces (our mind is very good at arranging random markings into familiar patterns — that's the way our brain works).

Check out Earth's face (the Badland Guardian), on Google Earth, at: 50° 0'38.20"N 110° 6'48.32"W.

Here is an excerpt of the text available on Google Earth:
    50° 0'38.20"N 110° 6'48.32"W.

The headphone is the result of a man-made road that was used BEFORE headphones were invented. How can it be an "accident"?

Another cover up for you to worry about.

  9. Maledicta says:

When you look at it from other directions, it is clearly a random pile of rocks. It needs the shadows to be just right to give the face effect. So, not built by Martians, but cool anyway.

  10. Fantail Flycatcher says:

Its not a cover up. but they uncovered yet another myth.
Its only that slopes facing a light source appear brighter than those facing away. MSSS scientists have developed a "shape-from-shading" technique that can be applied to planetary images. So to get the correct shape image was taken from various angles.
Using the height field, it is also possible to view the "Face" from different look directions, by mapping the Viking Orbiter image directly on the the topography and then placing the "viewer" at different locations.

  11. S P says:

It probably is erosion or was caused by some other natural element. Even if there was once life on Mars, I think we can all agree, the surface is pretty dead now. It's extremely unlikely that any geographic monument they made would survive so long, much less be distinguishable by us alien (to them) humans. For all we know that could be what a Martian butt looked like.

  12. laurahal42 says:

We see faces any time there is the slightest suggestion of one. It's how our minds work, and the psychological term is pareidolia.

There is no cover up, because there is nothing to cover up.

  13. william k says:

It's a face. anyone who actually takes 5 minutes to research the topic can figure that out I hope. I hate to push conspiracy theories but the older I get the more convinced I am that there is a conspiracy to keep people stupid and thinking about the next American idol. If we actually stressed education and science to the masses there would be a lot of $hit hitting the fan when the masses started calling the world governments out on things like the face.

  14. Reach says:

It's a good example of people deriving meaning from something where there is none. It's just a rock formation that provides the illusion of looking like what we perceive to be a face.

A higher resolution image shows quite clearly there is no face: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Mars_face.png

Edit: Wow, a billion people beat me to this. Haha!

  15. Snowballs Chance says:

OK, Reach, you beat me by one!

    Bobby's right, in every sense.

It's all just smoke and mirrors.
The conpsirers against ANYTHING the government or scientific community says will pick up any tiny little piece of dust, and run with it… The entire time, screaming,"Cover-up!!!!!!"

    That sucks.

  16. Tom A says:

You only seen one photo of poor quality, taken from a certain angle, with the sun at a certain angle.

Trust me, the other photos from other angles show that it is a slightly ragged hill.

  17. Jason T says:

What cover-up? NASA PUBLISHED the photo! If they wanted it covered up, why would they release the picture to all and sundry?

Better pictures taken since show it to be a random rocky outcrop that looks nothing like a face.

  18. Mark says:

    I'd hit it.
